Having been the head of a department for 15 years at a large institution, I agree completely with the points maid. Learning to really listen is very important, and being prepared to change your mind when you receive reasonable suggestions from members of the department. Nothing can destroy morale more than apparent rigidity and most of all empathy, especially when department members are going through a rough period.
